The Varna Opera is a centre of attraction of persons with different musical interests and likes. Its main purpose is to enrich the spiritual life of people, to inspire their love towards good music and to habituate the modern generation to the intellectual values.
The Varna Opera was established in early 1947. The then Art Director Peter Raichev, well-known for his musical and organizational talents, was a notable person in Bulgarian opera art. He quickly succeeded to attract a group of talented and perspective singers, with which help the Varna Opera started to gain popularity. The first manifestation of the new-formed young singers and their leaders was the opera by famous B. Smetana "The Bartered Bride".
After the union of Varna Opera with Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999, the opera’s name was changes and now it is famous under the name Opera and Philharmonic society – Varna.
Varna Opera was in a tour to various European countries, such as the former Czechoslovakia, Italy, Greece, Romania, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and even to others continents in countries like India, Egypt, etc.
Varna Opera’s Repertoire
The repertoire of the opera contains various musical compositions from different historical periods. The lovers of opera genre will have the opportunity to enjoy the opera music from great composers who lived during the period of XVIII - XIX centuries, such as Mozart, Offenbach, Dvorak, Strauss, Prokofiev, Bellini, Rimsky-Korsakov, Lehar, Kalman, as well as many modern composers. Together with these performances, there are various adapted for children plays, as well as educational programs. The musical children will have a good time, listening and watching those special performances.
International musician festival “Varna Summer” is conducted each year in Varna and the Varna Opera partakes with regular performances.
Getting To Varna Opera
Varna Opera is housed in the building of Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre. It is situated in the immediate vicinity of the Varna Regional Court and the fountains in the city-centre. The Cathedral is just in 5 minutes walk and the central beach is in 20 minutes walk from there.
The opera’s ticket office is opened Monday to Friday from 10am till 1pm and 2pm till 6pm and Saturday from 11am till 6pm.
The prices of tickets depend on the zone seats, as follows: the price of tickets for VIP seats of first zone are 20 lv, the second zone – 10 lv, the third zone – 7 lv and the fourth zone – 5 lv. Special discount of 15 lv per VIP seat is applied for groups of more than 10 persons, and 10 lv for children and students. The prices of educational concerts are 3 lv.
