Varna Archaeological Museum

Varna Archaeological Museum is among the most popular museums in Bulgaria. Its rich collection attracts many visitors both from Bulgaria and worldwide. Every year scientists and tourists, as well as local people and pupils come here to see and learn more about customs and culture of the people in the remote past.

Varna Archaeological Museum History
The beginning of the Varna Archaeological Museum is connected with the names of two Czech brothers - Herman and Karel Škorpil. Their impact in the cultural and enlightenal life of Varna is irreplaceable. Under their guidance a group of prominent peoples and teachers is gathered to establish Archaeological Society, which main goal is to raise the social knowledge about Varna`s and Northeast Bulgarian history.

1906 is the year of the Museum’s first official exhibition, which is exposed in the Girls’ High School. The Museum’s first director is Karel Škorpil and after his death, the Archaeological Museum is become a state property. The Museum is remained in the same building until 1952 when it is moved into the building of another school. In 1983 its official place is become Girls’ High School again where it is located until now.

Varna Archaeological Museum has a rich collection of more then 100,000 objects like ceramics, coins, cult items, golden necropolis, icons, jewelry, weapons, etc. The visitors have the opportunity to examine exhibits dated from various historical periods - Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages and Ottoman Period.

Thanks to the Archaeological collective and its discoveries, the Archaeological Museum is become a basis for creation of other museums in Varna, such as the Museum of the Bulgarian Revival, the Navy Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, etc.

The World Oldest Golden Treasure
The most attractive exposition in Varna Archaeological Museum for both tourists and archeologists worldwide is certainly the oldest golden treasure in the world dated from 4000 BC. It consists of about 2000 golden objects of 23,5 carat gold with the total weight of about 5.5 kg. Among the most amazing and interesting exponents is the golden scepter – a symbol of monarch’s power.

Originally intended to be a Girls’ High School, the building is created in New Renaissance architectural style and has continuous corridor adorned with wall paintings. In the form of a square, the building has a basement and two floors, completely occupied by the Museum’s exhibits. Along with the Museum collection, there is a Museum of Studies in the same building, intended to acquaint children with the historical heritage of this region, as well as a Library, which is famous with its rich collection of archeological books.
